St. Drogo

St. Drogo

Last week in Tempe, AZ I learned that St. Drogo is the patron saint of coffee and coffee houses. I’m indebted to Fr. John and the parishioners of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Tempe for this information. I took a cell phone picture of St. Drogo which is posted on the wall of one of the meeting rooms at Holy Spirit. Parishioners gather nearly everyday after daily Mass for coffee and fellowship.

  1. Thanks Don, that’s great.

Before I could be baptized by the permanent deacon of the sleepy parish near where I went to college, I had to go be “examined” by the venerable pastor. I was sent into the rectory after a weekday Mass, while the deacon, his wife, and my sponsors waited outside. It was totally pro forma.

When I came out they asked me how it went and I said it was no big deal. They asked if he had given me coffee, and I said yes. “Was it good?” They asked.

“No,” I said, “it was terrible.” And the deacon said,

“Welcome to the Catholic church. The coffee isn’t good here.”

Of everything I learned early on, that’s one of the few things that’s more or less turned out to be true.

  2. Rev. Thomas J Hallsten says:

Thanks for your note about Saint Drogo. We decided to name the ‘morning coffee group’ in honor of Saint Drogo (Druon) because of his alleged interest in coffee. Drugo was a shepherd so we assumed that he had some sleepless nights. Fr. Thomas, pastor.
